Bel Air has its roots in the vision of a man named Alphonzo Bell, Sr. Bell was, among other things, a wealthy oil investor and real estate developer. The lush and rolling landscape of the Santa Monica foothills west of Los Angeles appealed to Bell as the makings of an upscale residential community. He had 600 undeveloped acres on which to make his vision a reality. Roads, utilities, homes and the country club were built in the 1920s, and Bel Air has never looked back. The community’s upscale identity has inspired the entertainment industry for many years, both as a subject and as a filming location. Bel Air is considered part of the “Golden Triangle,” a term designating the three exclusive Los Angeles communities of Bel Air, Beverly Hills and Holmby Hills.
